其實二戰的故事,關於D Day,關於花園市場,關於大大小小的各種戰役,都難免會成為一種迴憶的手段。*因為太多人深陷在裏麵,並且擰成瞭一條繩子。They knew what it was all about. They belonged.

George Koskimaki is a noted historian of the 101st Airborne Division.
In his introduction of this book, here is some description about himself:
『My own experiences are included. I served as radioman for General Maxwell D. Taylor, the division commander, and parachuted from his plan. Throughout the war I kept a daily log of my actions on onion-skin paper from the backs of Signal Corps message books. Larer, as we returned to the rear areas for rest, I transcribed my notes into the regular diary which had been left behind. My fiacee, now my wife, saved all my letters from the battle areas.』

Most of the soldiers of the 101st U.S. Airborne Division - the Screaming Eagles - did not go in on the beaches of Normandy but dropped onto the dark fields of France dangling from parachutes or strapped into gliders. And many watched as their comrades were gunned down as they floated in midair or dangled from trees and could do nothing to save them. These eyewitness accounts are given by the commanders, the platoon sergeants, the medics, the chaplains, and the lowly privates. We read in their words of the wait for the orders to fly, the tension that filled the planes, the tragedy of those who never made it to the ground, their disorientation on landing, their drowsiness due to medication and lack of sleep, and their sheer will to survive, find the rest of their units, and get their missions accomplished - knowing that the men storming the beaches of Normandy were counting on them.
