Born in 1896, Paul Van Ostaijen was a great innovator and experimenter in the Dutch language, as well as introducing into the Low Countries French Cubism and German Expressionism. During the period in which he wrote, he underwent a rapid evolution from "unanimist" points of view to a loss of humanitarian views presented in his later work.
