Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, the second novel by this leading postwar Japanese writer, tells the poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of an aristocratic northern Japanese family and the impact of Western ideas. In consequence, he feels "disqualified from being human"( a literal translation of the Japanese title).
Like the protagonist of No Longer Human, Shuji Tsushima (whose pen name was Osamu Dazai) was b orn into a wealthy landowning family in remote northern Japan, in 1909. He began writing short stories while studying French literature at Tokyo Imperial University (which he left without a degree), and soon become well known among the younger generation in Japan, not least for his bohemianism and excesses. After World War II he gained wide recognition for his novels, particularly No Longer Human and The Setting Sun. Most of his works are marked by opposition to the aristocracy and bourgeoisie, and by profound pessimism. Following several unsuccessful suicide attempts, he drowned himself in 1948 together with a lover.
看美剧的时候,经常能听到一句台词,叫做“I'm not judging you.”
