In a heavily mortgaged country house, an heiress’s sinister guardian attempts to trap her in a bedroom with a rare Indian swamp adder—a murder averted only by the timely intervention of Sherlock Holmes. 评分霍剋的老福仿作，有幾篇如果不是掛上老福的名字，我還以為在讀山姆霍桑。盡管如此，能再次讀到霍剋真是太好瞭
评分【藏書閣打卡】寫同人仿作真是一種還願，有機會讓原著中不可能的事發生。這本也是如此。幾乎每篇開頭都是原著中“你是從阿富汗來的嗎？”式的標誌性情節。《聖誕節的委托人》把《愛麗絲漫遊奇境記》的作者劉易斯·卡羅爾還有莫裏亞蒂都放在一起，簡直是非常好萊塢或者柯南式的劇情。《濛特利爾醜聞》福爾摩斯難得遠渡重洋到加拿大隻為瞭幫助“那個女人”，最後的《泰坦尼剋號冒險記》將傑剋·福翠爾和福爾摩斯放在一起探案，最後還將該故事不為人知的奧秘給予解釋，非常好。其餘的很多都玩語言梗，有點微妙。有些也和戰時的環境呼應。有些則帶有一些反推理或者調侃的感覺。一般的探案裏最喜歡《馬戲團花魁》。想不到這是霍剋最後的一本瞭啊。一轉眼他也離開瞭十年有餘瞭。
