Earth-Moon-Earth (E.M.E) is a form of radio transmission whereby messages are sent in Morse-code from earth, reflected from the surface of the moon, and then received back on earth. The moon reflects only part of the information back – some is absorbed by its shadows, 'lost' in its craters.
For this work, Katie Patterson has translated Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata into Morse-code and sent it to the moon via E.M.E. Returning to earth 'fragmented' by the moon's surface, it has been retranslated into a new score, the missing notes becoming intervals and rests. The sonata was sent and received, bar-by-bar in ten sections.
Katie Paterson creates poetic works of art that address our physical landscape in unimagined and inspiring ways. Offering fresh insight into the imaginative potential of present-day technologies, Paterson gives new meaning to the conceptual tradition of art as idea.
