Brilliant. The structure of two different narrators lays bare the construct of fiction and the malleability of memory, poignant in the context of adolescent sexual abuse--the teenager's idea of her agency makes her blame herself, as an adult she struggles with a new narrative. Overwrought/dazzling language in 1st act. Doles out clues patiently.
評分3.5 到底該多信任一本小說的narrator呢?作者告訴我們其實講故事的人掌握的權力太大瞭,we tell the stories we need to live.
I quite like the plot structure and writing. 三重推進 Act 1摻雜瞭小說虛構成分 Act 2切換主人公視角並加入瞭先前被隱藏的信息 Coda再度增添揭露幾個人物身份的綫索 Talking about the whole idea of the unreliable narrators. The relevation of Karen's pregnancy is deftly handled. Act 2 is the strongest in my view - perhaps by invoking the proverbial Chekhov's gun!

In an American suburb in the early 1980s, students at a highly competitive performing arts high school struggle and thrive in a rarified bubble, ambitiously pursuing music, movement, Shakespeare, and, particularly, their acting classes. When within this striving “Brotherhood of the Arts,” two freshmen, David and Sarah, fall headlong into love, their passion does not go unnoticed―or untoyed with―by anyone, especially not by their charismatic acting teacher, Mr. Kingsley.
The outside world of family life and economic status, of academic pressure and of their future adult lives, fails to penetrate this school’s walls―until it does, in a shocking spiral of events that catapults the action forward in time and flips the premise upside-down. What the reader believes to have happened to David and Sarah and their friends is not entirely true―though it’s not false, either. It takes until the book’s stunning coda for the final piece of the puzzle to fall into place―revealing truths that will resonate long after the final sentence.
