以篇幅來說，這本書的論證的確有些狹隘，畢竟覆蓋範圍太廣，但是不得不說，在比較文學視野下，這是先秦研究入門的經典之作瞭，通讀之後會快速建立起一個宏觀架構。

大傢之作。不喜其口氣。有泛濫之嫌。過重名、墨二傢，論儒不得其要（依fingarette小書the secular as sacred立論，卻忽視人傢首章論禮內在神聖性的要點，一味強調製度性因素），別子為宗。寧取早年研究二程之專著。

葛瑞漢（1919—1991），當代英國著名漢學傢和哲學傢。1919年生於威爾士；早年就讀於牛津大學；二戰期間在英國皇傢空軍服役，曾在倫敦大學亞非學院接受日語培訓，並被派往馬來西亞、泰國等地擔任日文翻譯；退役後重返亞非學院學習中文，1950年畢業後留校任教，1953年獲博士學位，曆任講師，教授；1981年當選為英國學術院院士；1991年病逝。《泰晤士報》稱他為：“世界公認的中國哲學和語言研究的重要權威，中國哲學與詩詞的天纔翻譯傢，把中國古代的生活理念介紹給西方的傑齣闡釋者。”

他的主要著作有《兩位中國哲學傢：程明道與程伊川》（1958年）、《列子譯注：道的經典》（1960年）、《價值問題》（1961年）、《後期墨傢邏輯、倫理與科學》（1978年）、《：內七篇及其他作品》（1981年）、《理性與自然》（1985年）、《陰陽與關聯思維的本質》（1986年）、《中國哲學與哲學文獻研究》（1986年）、《論道者：中國古代哲學論辯》（1989年）和《理性中的非理性》（1992年）等。其中，《論道者：中國古代哲學論辯》是其最重要的代錶作。
