From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-- Sloppy definitions in the glossaries and haphazard organization detract from an otherwise worthwhile series. Pesticides repeatedly cautions young readers to avoid fruits and vegetables from overseas since they may contain more pesticides than are allowed by the United States. However, no mention is made of the sale of unsafe pesticides by American companies to underdeveloped countries. Toxic Waste includes discussions of Love Canal, household chemical use, and radon. The latter is not toxic waste but a naturally occuring gas resulting from the decay of uranium ore in rocks and soil. Such errors of detail are common throughout these works. Endangered Species follows the general format including personal anecdotes, full-color photographs, and suggestions for possible action by ordinary citizens. In Drought , various areas of the Earth are examined but no clear understanding emerges as to how lack of rain and poor farming practices together cause famine and starvation in underdeveloped countries. Defining "irrigation" as the use of river water for farmers' fields is inaccurate. All of these books are mildly critical of American governmental policies on pollution and environment. Each notes private and governmental agencies to contact and urges young people to take action. However, some suggestions are unrealistic for the age of the readers. This, plus the errors, makes the set less valuable than the many other titles already available. Zipko's Toxic Threat (Messner, 1986), although less attractive, offers more accurate information. --Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NYCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
