From School Library Journal Grade 5-12-- Timely topics and concise formats offer students frameworks by which to practice acquiring and honing abilities needed for critical thinking. Each title employs a specific study focus to examine the qualities of two opposing viewpoints, with a clearly presented purpose and appropriate examples. The unique components of the particular skill are then delineated to familiarize readers with the specific vernacular, methods, or techniques used. Brief sample viewpoints and analyses further emphasize the focus skill. The remaining chapters cover fuller opposing viewpoints with a preface for preparedness and an ending for independent evaluation. In all books, the use of two text colors differentiates areas of study from questions and headlines, enabling students to read uninterruptedly or pause with prompts. The liberal integration of cartoons and charts complements the discourse, and shows the impact of other influences. Most impressive is the inclusion of periodical citations, government statistics, recognizable organizations, and notable people and sources. The large, slim volumes are similar in design and provide continuity in accruing new skills from all entries in the series. --Ellen Dibner, East School, Long Beach, NYCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
