DEAR PARENT Jesus told the Parable of the Two Sons (Matt. 21:28-32) during a confrontation between Himself and members of the Sanhedrinï¼Œ the supreme Jewish council. Jesus had made His dramatic Palm Sunday entrance into Jerusalem; He had driven the moneychangers and merchandisers from the Temple. Now in the final days before His deathï¼Œ He was staying in Bethanyï¼Œ just a short distance from Jerusalemï¼Œ and going daily to the city to teach. The Sanhedrin had already decided that Jesus must dieï¼Œ and they were seeking evidence to justify their decision. "By what authority are You doing these things?" they asked. Christ responded to their question with a question of His ownï¼Œ a question the chief priests and elders were not willing to answer. He then told the story of the two sonsï¼Œ and His message was clear: The leaders of Israel had promised to obey Godï¼Œ but they were not willing to follow Him and do His will; they were like the second son who promised to take part in the harvest but did not do so. The message is also clear for us: It is not enough for us to say we believe in Jesus and that we will follow Him.
