Both young folk wander off and happen upon each other. They exchange stares for a pregnant moment， then their respective fathers， apparently not noticing anything unusual， whisk them away. There are lots of flaws here. Both fathers (but especially Xinni's!) must be remarkably near-sighted to miss one another， the young folk are together for only a few seconds， there's no hint of a repeat meeting， and the only sign of change is David's subsequent appreciation of woodland beauty. Bland illustrations feature pointy-eared， large-eyed elves. They might as well be human， as there's certainly nothing eldritch about their house or daily life. Xinni plays with blocks， a teddy， and other familiar toys (not a book in sight) as his mother silently does the sweeping and sewing.
