Our purpose in writing this book is to provide the health care professional with a
practical, usable, and effective handbook for client assessment in the home. A
general overview of health assessment in the home is presented in Chapter 1 to
guide the practitioner through the basic areas of the assessment process. Following
that, the client health history and the general survey are discussed in Chapter 2
with emphasis on points specific to home care.
We believe that health assessment is an integral component of nursing practice
in any setting but that there are particular areas of the assessment that are unique to
the home environment. These areas include assessment of self-administered
medication, the home environment, and learning needs, which are covered in
Chapters 3 through 5.
