How to Use This Book
Welcome to a select group~those wrestling with the decision
whether or not to have surgery. Perhaps a disease has been
discovered. Or maybe surgery is needed to repair damage or cor-
rect a defect. In any case, the reality of surgery is serious and can
be overwhelming. There are risks. Tissue removed during surgery
can never by replaced.
Let the buyer beware. You will not find the terms "contract"
"promise," or "guarantee" in a medical dictionary. The outcome
of your surgery, whether positive or negative, will always be a part
of your life, It is your responsibility to find out what you are about
to undergo.
Preparation, surgery, and recovery are the three stages of sur-
gery. Try to focus on each step separately and only when it occurs.
If you can direct your energy towards learning and understanding
these stages, you will have little time left for worry. The knowledge
you acquire will displace your fear of the unknown.
This overview of the surgical process presents facts as well as
alternate points of view. With more of the facts made clear, it s eas-
ier to make the best decision.
This book is divided into four parts. These may be read in any
order to suit your needs. Most chapters end with a summary of
main points or a detailed checklist to assist planning.
Part 1: The Surgery Primer. These chapters provide an overview
of the surgical process, including terminology and location.
Part 2: Preparing for Surgery. With a better grasp of the concepts,
you can now begin to prepare for surgery.
Part 3: Having Surgery. An insider s look at the process of surgery
is presented.
