埃裏剋是個生於美國、長於美國的地道的美國人。他1884年齣生於馬薩諸塞州，在科羅拉多州的丹佛市長大，又到新英格蘭的達特茅斯學院上大學。1906年大學畢業後，他為許多傢報社寫過新聞。第一次世界大戰發生時，他有機會到法國參與救濟波蘭難民的組織，這是他接觸到波蘭人的開始，也是從此影響瞭他一生方嚮的際遇。

1926年，埃裏剋迴到美國繼續未完的學業。《波蘭吹號手》“The Trumpeter Of Krakow”便在此時問世，並且在隔年獲得“紐伯瑞金牌奬”。1929年他拿到碩士學位，順利地留在母校教授“新聞學”。1930年、1931年分彆寫下瞭“The Blacksmith Of Vilno”和“The Golden Star I Of Halich”，這三本書被稱為是他描寫波蘭城市的三部麯。在贏得“紐伯瑞奬”後的10年中，他大約寫瞭10本書，包括給大人和孩子的，其中關於波蘭的占瞭四分之三。而且，雖然他的多本故事是歸類在兒童小說裏，但卻吸引瞭成人的注目。
