One thing can be said about every par-
ent in the world. They start out as rank
amateurs, and although many try to pre-
pare themselves before having children,
everyone makes mistakes. And why not?
Children are incredibly complex and no
two are exactly alike. Once parents begin
to learn how to deal with the tempera-
ment of one, another arrives on the scene
and the rules of the game are changed!
To make things more difficult, the pres-
sures of an immoral society place new
stresses on every family, enticing today s
adolescents into drug and alcohol abuse,
sexual experimentation and rebellion.
Finally, some authorities have consis-
tently blamed parents-especially mothers
-for everything that can possibly o
wrong with children, adding guilt to t~e
burden of pain.
These frustrations have produced what
Dr. James Dobson calls a "crisis of confi-
dence" in today s parents. This fact was
verified in his study of more than 35,000
parents. When Dr. Dobson asked about
their greatest frustrations in raising chil-
dren, the majority focused not on their
sons and daughters, but on their own fail-
ures as parents. "I just can t cope" was the
most common reply.
