of the Union for the second time, when
Jefferson Davis was President of the
Confederate States and Archduke
Maximilian was precariously perched
on the Mexican throne. In Britain
Palmerston was presiding over his
second ministry and income tax was
ninepence in the pound. Now in its
125th year this essential book of
reference is still unrivalled. It contains
facts and figures of the countries of the
world from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe
normally only available in dozens of
separate volumes, with data obtained
from official and unofficial sources.
John Paxton, who joined the publi-
cation in 1963, the centenary year, and
became editor in 1969, is in constant
touch with the affairs of every country,
and provides extensive data from official
semi-official and private sources.
He is editor of The Statesman s Year-
Book Historical Companion. He also
compiled The Statesman s Year-Book
World Gazetteer, now in its third
edition, and has written many books on
European affairs including A Dictionar3
of the European Communities.
