When a properly brought up, some-
what inhibited, strong-minded girl is
suddenly thrust into tile bizarre,
strangely threatening world of actors,
her life begins to change in ways to
mateh her r~ew surroundings.
Alison Howard, researching the life
of the now dead playwright Lionel
Vail, finds herself in a Connecticut
town where the Vail family is reopen-
ing its small private theater to smnlner
stock. Also reopened are some mys-
teries of the past and the present, along
with some ominous questions that
could affect Alison s future: Did Lie-
nel Vail comlnit suicide? Why did he
leave such a strange suicide note ? If,
indeed, it was a suicide note. What
happened to the manuscript of the
play he had finished just before he
died? Before these questions are a~-
swered-and some puzzles solved con-
cerning the visiting actors and Vail
family relationships-Alisort is dealt
her fnll share of danger, fear, glamour,
and love.
