THIS VOLUME is intended to offer American Catholic readers
a survey of Protestant, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and Old
Catholic churches and sects in the United States. Additional
chapters have been included on the Jews, Mormons, Christian
Scientists, Baha is, Muslims, Buddhists, and other religious
groups.
Since 1958 when the first edition of Separated Brethren was
published, the Catholic world has witnessed the far reaching im-
pact of the Second Vatican Council and the Church s growing
involvement in the ecumenical movement. These changes have
been reflected in the thorough revision of each denominational
description.
The two introductory chapters present an overview of Amer-
ican religious life and the basic theological differences between
Catholicism and Protestantism. This was done to avoid restat-
ing fundamental Protestant principles such as the sole sufficiency
of the Bible in subsequent chapters on particular denominations.
Those who wish to use this book as a handbook for reference will
want to keep this in mind. The chapters on denominations out-
line the history, doctrine, ritual, organization, and traditions of
each group.
Footnotes have been kept to ~a minimum. Separated Breth-
ren was written for the parish priest, Newman chaplain, reli-
