The descriptions in this book are grouped by watersheds
and coastal regions. Each chapter begins with e map that
identifies and locates the rivers covered in the text Within
the chapter the rivers are described in alphabePcal order
With two exceptions: ( 1 ) chapters that are named for a
large fresh=water river begin with the description of that
river; (2) rivers in chapters that have the word "coastal" in
the title are arranged in order from south to north or west
to east.

New descriptions of many rivers have been written for this book, and they appear in a format where general com-
ments, important information, and details are treated
separately.The text you are now reading is an example of
the typeface used for this new material.
General comments about the river and the
country through which it flows follow the headings and
subheadings. Much of this information is intended to help
you a and decide which parts of it to run.
