Here is a book that is truly different. It contains thirty-six embroidery designs
from some of the finest teachers and designers of our time. Most of them are
nationally known; this is the debut of one or two. On these pages are not only their
designs, but their thoughts on working them. Each is individually presented and has
the imprint of the person whose work it is.
Except where unusual stitches have been employed, stitch charts have not
been included. There are many fine stitch books readily available. However, text
and charts show where stitches are used. Color suggestions have also been in-
cluded.
Eleven different techniques are shown: crewel, canvas, blackwork, pulled
threads on both fabric and canvas, cross-stitch, silk and metallic threads in both
secular and church work, stump work, white work, hedebo on both fabric and
canvas, and two designs showing a combination of techniques.
I sincerely wi~h to thank these nineteen artists for allowing me to share with
you their exceptional talents. And my appreciation also goes to photographers
John Ogden Studios, Charles Haralson, Loy Westbury, Harold Pratt, Chet Brickett,
Bob Talley, Philip Bergh, Patricia Lambert, David Feisner, Helen Wilson Sherman,
Lee Angle Photography Ltd., Armen Tachjian, AI LeClaire, Jan Thacher, Henry
Rorden, Photo Dynamics, Don Servais, Jack Kausch, and McKenzie Dickerson for
their photographic expertise. Aren t their pictures lovely?
As well, my thanks to all others--and there were many--especially Barbara Eyre
for extra help and Jeanne Simpson for typing the manuscript.
I hope you will find this a book to treasure as well as to use and enjoy.
