Between 1920 and 1950, America was one tough country. The land-
scape from New York City to Los Angeles was a single poorly-lit city
street, traversed by huge black sedans with running boards and lined
with gambling dens, speakeasies, and cheap boarding houses. The
residents were small-time hoods perpetually muffled in fedoras and rumpled
overcoats, rich thrill-seekers slumming to pique their jaded appetites, smart-
;ileck con men looking to make a quick buck, and painted ladies of dubious
virtue. When they walked the streets it was to a background rhythm of
belching .45 automatics police were powerless to stop. None of them
showed their face before nightfall, and every morning, they read the obitu-
aries like the sports page.
