This book is for you if you or anyone close to you have ever been depressed

and the usual treatments failed to offer significant relief or if you have ever

been fatigued to a point where your enjoyment of life was compromised and

repeated medical examinations and laboratory tests indicated that you

should be feeling great.

I believe that the program provided in this book can help bring

happiness and energy back into your life.

For more than twenty years I have been working with people who have

experienced depression and fatigue and have not responded to the usual

treatments of psychotherapy and antidepressant medications. Early in my

career in psychiatry, I questioned the prevailing thinking that if you were

depressed, something (perhaps hidden causes in one s background) caused

that depression. I was not alone in my doubts about the psyche being the

exclusive source of depression. By sharing findings and experie~es with

my colleagues and by listening to my patients, I was able to discover

hidden causes for some depressions and fatigue that remain prevalent in our

society and that are strongly connected to our daily diets.

The solutions found in the following pages are neither the end nor the

beginning of our research, but somewhere in between. As time passes more

will be learned, techniques will be perfected for easier and more exacting

diagnosis, and treatments will be fine-tuned. What follows is what we know

today of some of the most common and most overlooked causes of depres-

sion and fatigue.

I have had the great satisfaction, when applying the principles outlined

in these chapters, of seeing people who were at the point of despair, return

to happy, energetic, and productive lives. I feel privileged to share this

information with you.
