Her wide-angle perspective touches on cultural， historical， and political aspects of the subject， ranging from the current controversy surrounding transracial adoptions to racial pigeonholing and the work of activist organizations devoted to supporting and informing multiracial individuals. Gay certainly recognizes the discrimination， but she puts it in balance， emphasizing that race is only a part of what makes an individual "who I am."
