Today close to four billion people<br >crowd the earth, and many dump sewage<br >and other wastes into its waters. Rivers-<br >the most intensely used of all ecosystems-<br >are further changed by dams, channeliza-<br >tion, erosion, biocides, and thermal pollu-<br >tion.
