PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS<br > When asked by my publisher whether or not I wished<br > to revise and update my Arthur Miller Criticism (1930-1967)，<br > published in 1969， I had mixed feelings about accepting that<br > difficult responsibility; first， because I am not a specialist<br > in Arthur Miller studies; secondly， because such a compre-<br > hensive bibliography would inevitably invite the exacting criti-<br > cism of learned scholars who might traditionally bear biases<br > or perhaps contempt for a bibliographer; thirdly， because I<br > know that a bibliography of this kind is necessarily a labor of<br > love， a risky and often thankless job， demanding a great deal<br > while giving little more than personal satisfaction in return;<br > and lastly， because， I had， as always， several important edi-<br > torial and research projects to direct at that time.<br > In spite of these difficulties and hesitations， I finally<br > decided to accept the challenge for several reasons. First，<br > I felt obligated to provide a revised and updated bibliography<br > for the general public， and especially for reference librarians，<br > students， and teachers who have patiently used the older bib-<br > liography in spite of its limitations and imperfections. Sec-<br > ondly， I wanted to make this book more functional by dras-<br > tically simplifying the organization. Lastly， no Arthur Miller<br > specialist has， to my knowledge， provided a book-length bib-<br > llography in the period since my own bibliography was pub-<br > fished in 1969.<br > Here， I have attempted to compile a more functional<br > and useful bibliography to save students， teachers， reference<br > librarians， and scholars time， energy， and frustration by put-<br > ting as many known bibliographical sources under one roof，<br > the roof itself better organized than in 1969. As I recall，<br > the 1969 volume， despite its shortcomings， received about ten<br > favorable reviews， most of which were written by reference<br > librarians and experts who knew the value of a comprehensive，<br > though not exhaustive， bibliography. In addition， the book pre-<br > eipitsted at least one harsh review from which I learned a<br > great deal (although nothing about courtesy or scholarly de-<br > corum).<br > vii<br >
