From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Boy and elf, in a snowy forest with their fathers, meet by chance. Both young folk wander off and happen upon each other. They exchange stares for a pregnant moment, then their respective fathers, apparently not noticing anything unusual, whisk them away. There are lots of flaws here. Both fathers (but especially Xinni's!) must be remarkably near-sighted to miss one another, the young folk are together for only a few seconds, there's no hint of a repeat meeting, and the only sign of change is David's subsequent appreciation of woodland beauty. Bland illustrations feature pointy-eared, large-eyed elves. They might as well be human, as there's certainly nothing eldritch about their house or daily life. Xinni plays with blocks, a teddy, and other familiar toys (not a book in sight) as his mother silently does the sweeping and sewing. Shallow, abbreviated, and incidental. --John Peters, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
