chapter 1
Introduction to learning
WHY BOTHER with the scientific~study of learning when we seem to
know so much about it already? From the beginning, humans have
seen the benefits of learning for the transmission of cultural knowledge
and the teaching of useful skills. That schools have existed for thousands
of years is evidence of some understanding of the principles of learning
and of our application of them, as is less formalized learning in the
parent teaching skills to the child. Why bother with the scientific study
of learning if societies have been accomplishing all of these complex
kinds of learning for so long?
The answer is that folk wisdom cannot be discounted, but neither
can it be canonized. Through trial and error people "luck onto" many
relationships in their world that are useful and which are later elevated
to principles when the phenomena come under the icy scrutiny of scien-
tific investigators. That a primitive physician might rub dirt on a wound
and prevent infection is understandable in terms of our modern knowl-
edge about penicillin mold. The difference between the primitive physi-
cian and a modern physician lies in the identification of cause and effect
and the added sophistication that it brings. The primitive physician
probably believed that the dirt had curative powers in its own right
or, more remotely, that a god of healing worked through the physician
and the dirt to accomplish the cure. But those cures were fortuitous
cures because the primitive physician did not really understand the
responsible agent in the dirt and why it worked as it did, and so was
as likely to use the dirt treatment for a headache. The modern physician
knows the specific relationship between the penicillin mold and infection
and knows when and when not to apply it. Through systematic observa-
tion, usually in laboratory experiments, scientists have determined the
