Foreword
Roy Heath, a clinical psychologist, picked a sample of
thirty-six entering freshmen in the Princeton class of 1954
whom he would see as their preceptor or academic coun-
selor, once a week throughout their years at the college.
He matched this group, chosen to represent various di-
chotomies within the University such as public vs. private
high school, Princeton family vs. non-Princeton family,
and scholarship aid vs. fa.mily backing, against an appar-
ently similar group who were to be the controls, not seen
by Dr. Heath, and followe&only at a distance. One story in
this book concerns some of the presumptive effects of
Dr. Heath s plainly benign intervention in the lives of
the experimental group. The latter did better by Prince-
ton definition in almost every way: they won both more
academic and more non-academic honors, including class
office, debating, running
on.1 So far, the Princeton
the campus radio station and so
experiment" resembles ever so
many others which benefit (or, some would say, suffer)
1. Dr. Heath is inclined to think that students who run the student gov-
ernment and edit the daily paper exploit themselves to the University s
benefit and their own developmental disadvantage. I would share this
judgment in many instances. But as a sporadic reader of the Daily Prince-
tonian, I am not sure it is a poorer curriculum for some of its more enter-
prising editors than what they might otherwise be finding in or out of
their course work: that depends on many other things. I do agree with
Dr. Heath and many of his advisees that the writing of a senior honors
thesis is the single most educative experience an undergraduate can have,
and that the sense of accomplishment that results from a well-completed
task can carry over into many other aspects of life and work.
FOREWORD
