Since its inception a decade ago, the International Conference
on the Unity of the Sciences has had as its stated goal to shed critical
light on the moral and human dimensions in the application of science
and technology to the pressing problems of society. In steady pursuit
of this goal, the Conference has become an established international
forum for multidisciplinary exchange of views on timely and significant
issues of growing worldwide concern.
These volumes represent the Tenth Anniversary meeting of ICUS,
convened on November 9-13, 1981 in Seoul, Korea in the homeland
of the founder, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. In all, more than
1,000 scientists, scholars and observers from every field of academic
study from 109 nations were in attendance.
Reverend Moon set the tone for the Conference on the theme
of "The Search for Absolute Values and the Creation of the New
World", with his proposal of the buildingof an International Highway
system linking the countries of the East and West, to realize world
peace.
According to Reverend Moon:
With the integration of the world s economies, tremendous eco-
nomic progress will become possible and the people, who will all be
leading affluent lives, will be able to devote much of their time to
leisure. They will have time to understand nature and learn from it,
to give thanks to God for its beauty, and to live for and love each
other, transcending nationality. It is my conviction that such an ideal
world in which all people enjoy true life will certainly come.
