With little warn-<br >ing to its fifteen hundred employees， some of whose fathers and<br >grandfathers had worked for the company， the Anaconda Copper<br >Company clnsed the smelter that was as old as the town itself， and<br >its reason for existence. The smelter had processed the copper ore<br >mined in Butte， twenty-eight miles southeast， and the smelted cop-<br >per was then sent by rail to a refinery in nearby Great Falls. The<br >refinery was also closed soon afterward.<br >
