With little warn-<br >ing to its fifteen hundred employees, some of whose fathers and<br >grandfathers had worked for the company, the Anaconda Copper<br >Company clnsed the smelter that was as old as the town itself, and<br >its reason for existence. The smelter had processed the copper ore<br >mined in Butte, twenty-eight miles southeast, and the smelted cop-<br >per was then sent by rail to a refinery in nearby Great Falls.
