From Library Journal In this second edition (1st ed. LJ 7/85) Shangold (M.D., gynecology) and Mirkin (M.D. and coauthor of The Sportsmedicine Book , LJ 12/1/78) here set out to both encourage beginning exercisers and inform competitive athletes. They succeed on both counts. Readers are given a primer on exercise physiology before diving into sections on nutrition, drugs, heat and cold, and a relatively short section on injuries. Though this book doesn't cover as many sports injuries as Sandra Rosenzweig's Sportsfitness for Women ( LJ 6/15/82. o.p.), it excels with detailed explanations of menstrual cycles, menopause, pregnancy, and birth control. It updates information on steroids, birth control implants, and the "new" four food groups. Given the number of women needing authoritative medical sports information, this attractive book with clear explanations is recommended for public and college libraries.
