FOREWORD This book was written as an historical guide for per- sons who float or hike down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Of necessity its scope has been limited to sites and events close to the river. Significant new information and more than seventy additional photographs have been added to this edition. While not intended as a guide for getting down the riverï¼Œ the Forest Service chart with information on river rapids has been included as a convenience for some read- ers. Our hope is that by providing this history we may contribute in a small way to the preservation of the past and thereby fulfill a responsibility to the future.
