INTRODUCTION
Botswana is a very special place, rightly renowned for its wildlife. It is
the big animals which immediately come to mind and on a visit to the
national parks of Moremi and Chobe, for example, you are likely to
see many different kinds of antelope, elephant and hippo, giraffe, lion,
jackal and hyena, monkeys and baboons. With luck you could see
leopard, cheetah and rhinoceros. If you delight in birds you won t be,
disappointed, and you will keep your companions entertained as they
witness your dilemma in choosing between picking up binoculars to
get a better look at a new bird, a camera to photograph another and a
bird book to try to find out what both are!
If your wildlife interests are even more specialised, Botswana offers
a great diversity of plants, insects and reptiles. Some are as yet unnamed
- and could even bear your name if you introduce them to science.
Add to this array of plants and animals a unique geographical feature,
the Okavango Delta, where a river runs into a semi-desert, spills its
contents over a surface area of 13 000 km2 of waterways and then
quietly disappears under the thirsty sands, and you have another reason
to explore Botswana. Throw in the Kalahari Desert and the Makga-
dikgadi Pans and the reasons multiply.
Although the Okavango Delta is perhaps the most popular area,
Botswana has a great deal more to offer. The Kalahari Desert that finally
swallows the waters of the Okavango River holds strong attraction and
the diverse people of the country is another good reason to visit it.
Contrast and new experiences must be two of the main reasons for
travel. You will not find many countries on the African continent that
contrast so strongly with the urban environment of the average Amer-
ican or European traveller than does Botswana.
©³©¥©×©¥©×©¥©×©¥©·
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©Ç©¥©ï©¥©ï©¥©Ï ©§
©§ ©§ ©§ ©§ ©§
©»©¥©ß©¥©ß©¥©ß©¥©¿
