For the first 1 O0 years of psychotherapy， the goal has been to<br >understand the nature of emotional disturbance. However，<br >as this book shows， the basic curative factor in today s<br >multitude of psychotherapies is not the pursuit of the<br >underlying truths of emotional disorders. To the contrary，<br >therapists are offering patients a variety of fabrications and<br >defenses designed to falsify and preclude the realization of<br >the painful emotional truths that form the basis of mental<br >suffering. Psychotherapy， be<br >vention， encounter group， or<br >it psychoanalysis， crisis inter-<br >behavior modification， offers<br >"cure" through lies and barriers， rather than through genuine<br >insight.<br > The published material in the field of psychotherapy，<br >discussed in the first section of this volume， is indeed cause<br >for alarm.
