From Library Journal Osteoporosis causes 1.5 million bone fractures every year; 80 percent of the victims are women who lose bone mass rapidly when their bodies stop producing estrogen. This disabling process can be prevented and treated with a combination of exercise, diet, hormone replacement, and calcium supplements. Both these books explain the condition and its treament adequately. Jacobowitz uses a question-and-answer format while Lyon and Sutton offer a more detailed narrative presentation. They also explain the anatomy and physiology of bone structure and provide recipes for calcium-rich dishes and exercise regimens. Both books contain glossaries, bibliographies, and referral lists. While Dr. Morris Notelovitz's Menopause and Midlife Health ( LJ 6/15/93) and Dr. Kenneth Cooper's Preventing Osteoporosis ( LJ 4/15/89) provide superior coverage of the subject, either of these new books would be acceptable additions to consumer health collections that need more osteoporosis material.- Barbara M.
