CHAPTER ONE
NASA MISSION C@NTI~OL, HOUSTON: 4:47 A.M. The early mQrning sky was still dark, but already NASA was buzzing with activity.
Flight Director Clark was watching astronaut Pete Shelby on a video monitor. He was talking him through repairs on the space shuttle Atlantis.
Dan Truman, the boss, could feel the tension in the air. The repairs were impor- tant, and Shelby was having trouble. He was breathing hard.
Truman tapped Clark on the shoulder and motioned for him to move aside. Then he sat down in front of the video screen.
"Pete, this is Truman. Let's try and relax a little, buddy. We've got plenty of time."
