<p>UCLA HISTORY<br />
The University of California had been established at that<br />
time， 1868， in northern California at Berkeley， across the<br />
Bay from San Francisco. Los Angeles area students who<br />
wanted to attend the state university had to go 500 miles<br />
from home. Even so， by 1910 there were more freshmen<br />
on the Berkeley campus from Los Angeles than there were<br />
from San Francisco.<br />
Southern Californians， however， wanted a state-support-<br />
ed， four-year college in their area. Their campaign for<br />
such a school， however， was resisted by most of the Uni-<br />
versity of California s regents and by the state s governor<br />
who did not want a "second " ~ "<br />
university at Berkeley. umverslty to challenge the<br />
Those seeking a state university in Los Angeles were led<br />
by Edward A. Dickson， who owned and edited the Los<br />
Angeles Herald-Express. He was also a university regent.<br />
Another supporter was Ernest Carroll Moore， director of<br />
the Los Angeles State Normal School.<br />
Negotiations over several years finally led to state officials<br />
okaying the opening of a "Southern Branch of the Uni-<br />
versity of California." The two-year school， which would<br />
become UCLA b the University of California， Los<br />
Angeles b opened in September 1919 with 250 students<br />
