POLICY
93
Labor Market
ns and Economic
This book is the product of a study group created at the School of
.~cial Service Administration at the University of Chicago and funded
by the Ford Foundation. The group s purpose was to study ethnicity
and race in American society. Joining us on the study group s panel
were Leonard Borman, Leona Grossman, and Dolores Norton--all three
authors of essays in this volumemas well as Arthur Mann, Preston
and Sterling Morton Professor in the Department of History at the
University of Chicago, and Donnell Pappenfort, Professor in the
School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.
As members of this group, all participated in the discussions that
generated these writings, helped define the contents of the book, and,
together, acted as an editorial board. Each author, in turn, enthu-
siastically worked with us in carrying out the research and writing
and then patiently edited so that the final volume would constitute
a coherent statement rather than merely a series of papers.
It is impossible to acknowledge and express appreciation to all
who have influenced our thinking and who have in this way con-
tributed to the writing of this book. Special gratitude, however, goes
to Reverend Andrew Greeley, whose valuable work and generous
counsel have shaped our own understanding of ethnic phenomena,
and to Joan Durman, who, as research assistant to the study group,
was responsible for the administration of the group s work and whose
valuable insights contributed significantly to the ideas expressed in
this volume.
PASTORA SAN JUAN CAFFERTY
LEON CH~TANG
Chicago, 1976
