<br >I Early Days<br >My early days were spent in Canterbury where I was born on July <br >13th,1908.I was the third child of my parents and had one brother<br >and three sisters.My father was a engineer,but he took up haulage<br >contracting and breweries and fruit and vegetables to Covent Garden.<br >Our family roots and my bringing up were entirely in the country-<br >side and I do not remember any member of the family who was<br >connected with the sea.<br > I was considered to be rather delicate as a child, so much so<br >that at five years of age my parents dressed me in a sailor suit<br >and had me photographed holding a model of a yacht, because<br >they thought that I might not live to become a real sailor. I had<br >to be wheeled to school in a pushchair and was unable to join in<br >the fun and games. However, I fooled them, for as the years passed<br >I gained in strength. I suppose this handicap really was a help<br >to me in later life because I used to dream of adventure. On<br >winter evenings my sister, Muriel, used to read to me and I<br >would sit on my bed enthralled by the stories of adventure,<br > particularly those about the sea.<br > My education started at St Paul s primary school, but later<br > on I went to the Simon Langton Grammar School at Canter-<br > bury. At that early age I was beginning to be an individualist<br > and wanted to be doing things. As I grewolder%nd stronger I<br > became keen on sport and in my early teen~I joined the<br > Canterbury Athletic Club and participated i~ long-distance<br > races and rowing events.
