凯特·汤普森，1956年出生于英国，是家庭中三个孩了中最小的一个。父母都是社会历史学家、作家。出于自己的兴趣爱好，在英国和美国从事了几年跟赛马有关的工作。大学学习法律。毕业一年后两度去印度旅行，并积极参与一些志愿者的工作。在此期间，举家迁往爱尔兰，现在居住在爱尔兰西海岸。她是一位高产且高质的作家，现在每年至少出版一本书。作品有《诱骗者》《炼金术士的学徒》《安南水》《丢失的联系》等等。她是有史以来唯一一个四度获得爱尔兰比斯托文学奖的作家。《寻找时间的人》是她的最成功的作品之一，本书出版后在英国、爱尔兰、美国、德国都获得了一系列重要的文学奖项。
