In 1971 I wrote in the precursor to this volume that I had tried to write a
book that would reflect theoretical concerns, practical interests, and the
ever changing demands made on those who administer our work organi-
zations by the world around them. While much the same interests have
guided me here, there are some changes also. Most significant of these, I
believe, is the increased focus in this book on work as a social institution
and as a psycho-social experience. This is a change which I believe is not
only necessary because of societal demands that those interested in
"work" should examine it, but which is also desirable if we are to make
"work" a better experience for individuals, organizations, and society. To
illustrate, we now have a societal movement where many women are
clamoring to have the type of experience (i.e., work) that some men are
clamoring to leave. Why? Paradoxes such as this come under examination
here.
