class white family, Sarah returns to her
Hopi village. She is hopeful that she can
now leave behind her "Bohanna," white
man s ways and adopt the life of her an-
cestors. But her hopes receive one defeat
after another. She finds she cannot accept
the villagers ancient religion and ways
of living any better than they can accept
her eccentricities. When she is raped by
a Hopi boy and bears his illegitimate
child, the tragic outlines of Sarah s life
seem so solidified.

dramatic story- and often a bitter one.
The forces of Sarah s fate are realistic
and there are no ,,,~-x mswers nor fairy-
