Catherine s uncle-guardian doesn t rear her to
be like other girls. Her mother, whom he loved,
wanted the girl to be free, informed, unafraid
as a man. And Catherine does grow up free.
She asks questions, she roams the city at will,
she dresses as she pleases, always unaware that
girls are meant to be different. And then, sud-
denly, she is no longer a child and Thorn, who
has been everything to her--father, teacher,
friend becomes one thing more, her lover.
Their affair, a passionate summer of ex-
ploration, ends when Catherine leaves for col-
lege, and Thorn for the battlefronts of World
War 11. Through college, career, marriage, a
new sophistication all the accomplishments
of a modern young woman--Catherine holds
to the memory of that summer as a lost
promise, until Thorn returns again in the
novel s moving climax.
