The Amazon river system stretches across South
America from the mountain wall of the Andes to the
Atlantic Ocean. Most of this area is a wilderness of
water and unexplored jungle--the home of
hummingbirds, acrobatic monkeys, jaguars, dolphins
and piranha fish.
In this book we examine the ancient formation of the
river; the dangerous voyages of explorers and
scientists; the structure of the forest; the adaptation of
plants and animals to their environment; the lives of
the Amazon Indians; attempts to develop the natural
resources of the area and the problems of modern
development schemes with their destruction of whole
areas of this unique, primeval forest.
