Set in Bohemian Paris at the turn of the century, this sinister novel was inspired by the notorious black magician Aleister Crowley. As well as a vibrant picture of Parisian café society, it extends the theme of bondage to explore the notions of psychic domination and hypnotic slavery.

这并不是个好故事，作者用了很多笔墨渲染巫术的神秘、奇异，可是并没有真正很神奇、扣人心弦的内容。人物塑造也有些单薄，除了Haddo。好在毛姆老爷子的文字功底还是在，能让人读下去。
