This novel begins in 1379, before the invention of the printing press, when books were illustrated by gifted artists. A man named Finn is one of these illuminators, producing work for the abbey in his East Anglian town. However, on the side, he also works for John Wycliffe, the heretical Oxford scholar who is engaged in a radical project forbidden by all-powerful Catholic church: an English translation of the bible. Finn's dangerous association with Wycliffe--and his affair with Lady Kathryn, his landlady--further threaten Finn's stability, and possibly even his life.
