A year ago, I gathered up my courage and wrote
to some well-known Americans, explaining that I
wanted to compile a "from-the-heart collection of the
feelings we ve always wanted to share with our fathers
--from the most whimsical to the straightforward and
serious," and inviting them to contribute letters as
long or as short as they liked. I wasn t at all sure how
many answers I would get (if any! ) or what they would
be like--and I certainly didn t anticipate the kind of
enthusiasm and generosity which actually came about.
When the first letters began to arrive, I was
amazed at their candor, and at the love which filled
every page. There were no "pretty" letters, superficial
and syrupy; and there weren t any letters which
focused more on the famous writer than on Dad.
Every response I received was open and heartfelt and
unpretentious. And as the process of bringing this
book together has unfolded, the contributors have
continued to be wonderfully cooperative. The result
has been one of the nicest "work" experiences anyone
could ask for.
