This book has been written for all beginning students of theatre tech-
nology and the arts of the visual production. It is intended for the many
courses that provide the student with a basic knowledge of the tech-
niques of theatre production and introduce the artistic and aesthetic
considerations which underly them. These considerations fall under the
new label of "scenography," although they are often subdivided into
such categories as scenery and property design, lighting design, cos-
tume design, and the like.
I approach the subject of stage technology and scenography from
a foundation of modern theatre aesthetics. This seems to be the only
reasonable way to connect art and technique in an area filled with in-
creasingly complicated technology. Otherwise mechanics threaten to
overpower the ultimate purpose of theatre, which must be art. Further-
more, the aesthetic foundations of theatrical production have broad im-
plications for all students of theatre whether their ultimate interests are
scenography, technology, acting, directing, or playwriting. Thus this
text serves one of the basic requirements for a beginning course in
theatre: it helps to establish broad foundations upon which later spe-
cialization may be built.
