o the Teacher

Basic Aims

There has been widespread interest in materials which provide guided

discussion for students of English. Talk It Over was a product of this

interest, and now Take a Stand has been written for further use m

intermediate English language classes being taught in an American Eng-

lish environment.

Take a Stand is similar to Talk It Over, but this book introduces

subjects which are even more exciting and controversial. Take a Stand

provides a framework through which the teacher can introduce a topic,

clarify the issues involved and stimulate a discussion. Each lesson has

been designed to proceed step by step in classes where students need

guidance or where students are somewhat unresponsive. "Fake a Stand

can also serve as a sourcebook for ideas in a class where everyone

participates freely.

Most of the lessons deal with serious topics--conservation, the arms

race. inflation and so forth. They have been selected for their relevance

to contemporary life and deal with issues which are of particular concern

to teenagers and adults. Each lesson is designed to clarify the issue in the

stndent s mind, and enable him or her to express a cogent personal

opinion about it. The format of each lesson gradually leads students into

a discussion with each other.

Who the Book Is For

Take a Stand is intended for intermediate level students of English,

eithe4 teenagers or adults. Since it is culturally and linguistically Ameri-

can, it will be particularly useful to those planning to live, work or study

in an American environment.
