雷·卡普钦斯基（1932—2007），生于波兰东部小城平斯克近郊一乡村教师家庭。童年遭受二战磨难。高中毕业后开始发表作品。1951年考入华沙大学语言文学系，后转入历史系学习。1956年毕业分配到《青年旗帜》杂志社工作，同年派往印度。1957年从日本转道北京，任特派记者。从此开始了他四十余年驻外记者的生涯，足迹遍及五洲四洋一百余个国家，特别是深入拉美、非洲、中东等人迹罕至的蛮荒地带，亲临火线，发回弥漫着硝烟的真实报道和照片。他一生亲历二十七场革命和政变，四次被判死刑，四十余次被拘关押。同时作为作家，获五十项国内国际大奖，六次提名诺贝尔文学奖候选人，创作了二十余部文学作品，有的被译成三十余种文字，在世界广为传播，被誉为20世纪最具影响力的作家之一。其主要著作有《生命中的另一天》（1976）、《皇帝》（1978）、《伊朗王中王》（1982）、《帝国》（1993）、《太阳的影子》（1998）、《与希罗多德一起旅行》（2004）。
